Where Do Pearls Come From? Freshwater Pearl Farm on the Tennessee River
Tennessee is the home of the only freshwater pearl farm in North America. Pearls have long been recognized as a symbol of purity and their popularity has remained stable for centuries. Pearls for ornaments and jewelry are formed by oysters or mussels on farms found mostly in Japan, China, South Seas and of course in Tennessee. Freshwater pearls are rarely found naturally in the Tennessee washboard mussel. Most of the pearls are grown at the only culturing farm operation in North America at Birdsong Resort near Camden, Tennessee on the Tennessee River. The pearls are composed of concentric layers of a crystalline substance called nacre which is calcium carbonate. It is this nacre that gives the pearl its lustrous iridescence and accounts for must of the pearls' beauty.
When we toured the Tennessee River Freshwater Pearl Farm in May, we were lucky to have been escorted by Adrienne who is the designer of the freshwater pearl cabochons which her customers use as ornaments. She explained how the pearls take the shape of ornaments. Adrienne said that there are different methods of seeding the mussels for pearls and that the implant method is the most suitable for making freshwater pearl ornaments since it gives the pearl farmer the most options for shapes and sizes. The implant or seed is made of the same material as the mussel shell and can be shaped to any size prior to implanting and it is actually implanted in the mussel. A round implant causes a round pearl to be formed and a triangle implant in the mussel will form a triangle pearl.
It sounds more simple than it really is of course, because there is a 3-5 year wait after the mussel with the implant is moved to the farm in the Tennessee River while mother nature works her magic. It isn't all magic however, because the mussels are closely monitored during this time for temperature and water quality and there are very few technicians that are skilled at implanting the seeds into mussels. It took many years before the Japanese technique of culturing pearls was successfully adapted to the Tennessee native waters and mussels, and 1984 was the first year that a productive harvest was turned. Thanks to the diligence of culturing farm founder John Latendresse, cabochons and jewelry or wearable ornaments can be viewed and purchased at moderate prices. If your interest is peaked, you can read more about the process of culturing freshwater pearls and perhaps even tour the Tennessee River Pearl Farm & Museum just off of I-40 in Tennessee.

Pearl Jewelry In Freshwater Pearls
People are opening the oyster and pop, to find a beautiful and brilliant pearlin it. Then the client decides, as a rule the ring in a pendant or ring setting is set for the pearl. It takes a lot to do with pearls. For example, in a pearl necklace 7.5 mm, there are usually 45-55 beads per string. Necklace of freshwater pearls in a variety of formats, but the most common size is 5 to 8 mm. Larger sizes are available, but costs do not increase the size too. One of the largest chains in freshwater cultured pearls, I saw a white man around 13-17mmCollar round freshwater is in what looks like a string of white South Sea seeks to close. Some jewelry stores that I could not go to make a difference when the South Sea pearls were white and freshwater. This dimension of the pearl is just not seen often. For a collection of this size, most people think that $ 20,000 more, but with freshwater pearls is a much lower price of about $ 2000 to $ 5000, depending on the quality and surface imperfections was. The surface quality is difficult tocope with this pearl of the size of freshwater cultured pearls. He begins to scratch a little "hard to describe, if it is a mirror like finish which is supposedly made of pearls. It is more of a pearly shell, as the brilliant, the pearl would be, if not with a shiny appearance.

Loose Freshwater Pearls
Freshwater pearls are made from freshwater mollusks which are mostly farmed in Japan and China. Most of the pearls sold in the market are cultured freshwater pearls that come in various shapes and colors. They also come in different sizes that one can use as pendants, strands and studs.
Freshwater pearls have sizes from 4mm to 11mm that are grouped according to their uniformity when sold in sets. One can choose from an array of colors such as grey, brown, pink, wine red, peach, orange and the rare black.
Freshwater pearls that have teardrop or pear shapes are used in pendants, earrings and as a center pearl in necklaces. The extremely interesting shape of baroque pearls make them ideal for necklaces too. Most freshwater pearls that are in production today are more round than the previous production of pearls. Some loose freshwater pearls are drilled at the center for one’s convenience in making strands for chokers, necklaces and bracelets. Coin and oval shapes are also available which are undrilled at the center because they sometimes go well as buttons or beads in bridal gowns. The button shaped pearls appear round and big when used as studs in earrings because the flattened half is usually covered.

How to Buy Pearls
Pearls are an enduring classic of romantic beauty and sophistication suitable for almost any occasions or celebrations. Pearls may be worn with formal eveningwear, with a business suit, or casually with a sweater and jeans. The official June birthstone provides an ideal choice for brides, young women looking for a touch of elegance, or a cherished gift for birthday, Christmas, graduation, sweet-sixteen, anniversary, or just to say I love you.
Once rare and expensive, modern cultured pearls have become an affordable luxury. To choose consider six factors contribute to the value of a pearl: luster, nacre thickness, shape, surface texture, size, and color.
Luster- the Essence of Pearl Beauty
Pearls gain their unique beauty from the play of light reflecting through layers of fine crystalline nacre gradually deposited by an oyster. Nearly transparent nacre gives the deepest luster and the highest reflection. A high-quality pearl will have a brilliant even reflection with a fine warm glow or radiance. Lower quality pearls have a dull sheen.
High-quality Akoya pearls have a higher luster than South Sea or Tahitian pearls, which tend to have a softer, more diffuse reflection.
Color and Overtones
The dominant color of a pearl comes from the main reflection from the pearl surface. The deeper reflected light draws the inner color from the pearl, called the overtone.
Light colored pearls are available in shades of white, cream, and golden. White with pink or silver overtones are generally the most valuable. The most desirable dark colored pearls are black with green or blue overtones. Color matching is also important when buying pearl jewelry. Perfectly matched pearls in color and size are more valuable than poorly matched pearls.
Shape and Surface Texture
The highest quality pearls are perfectly round with smooth surface, very few surface imperfections, and even coloration. Lower quality pearls may be nearly round, or show more surface imperfections, such as wrinkles or large pits on the surface.
Pearl Size and Necklace Length
The pearls in a strand are measured in a range, such as 7-7.5mm. They are strung with the largest pearls at the center of the necklace and gradually smaller towards the clasp. Larger pearls are more valuable and they create a more dramatic look. High-quality pearls larger than 9 mm are scarce and very expensive.
The classic and most common pearl necklace length is the 17-19 inch princess. It is a good choice for a first pearl necklace because it can be worn with many things.
Decide Pearl Types
There are four types of pearls:
1.Classic Akoya Pearls
2.Large Exotic Black Tahitian Pearls
3.Large Golden or White South Sea Pearls
4.Inexpensive Decorative Freshwater Pearls
The above four types of pearls are all cultured pearls. Akoya pearls, Tahitian pearls, and South Sea pearls grow in ocean saltwater so they are also called saltwater pearls.
Akoya pearls are the most popular type for their appealing high luster, luxury and affordability.
Decide Pearl Quality
Pearls usually have four grades: A, AA, AAA, and AAA+ quality. AAA and AAA+ quality are the highest quality.
AAA and AAA+ quality pearls are the most desired pearls for gifts. They have high luster and very clean surface skins.
AA quality pearls have medium luster and slight to medium surface imperfection. They are ideal gifts for someone who will be happy to own a piece of fine pearl jewelry.
A quality pearls have low luster and medium to heavy blemishes. They are not popular for gifts due to their low quality.
Decide where to buy pearls
You can buy cultured pearl jewelry from retail stores, online shops or online auctions. When shop for pearls, it is recommended to buy pearls from these places: stores that grade pearls carefully; stores that provide certificate and offer money back guarantees.

Akoya Pearls (Saltwater) Versus Freshwater Pearls
1) As you may have noticed, freshwater pearl jewelry is less expensive. And you know the Akoya pearl is more expensive....
A few reasons for this difference, one the freshwater pearl is easier to grow. Freshwater pearls are easier to grow because the process of nucleation is different and easier. The amount of nucleation per mollusk is much more in the freshwater pearl mussel (at one time 40 to 50) the most an akoya can produce might be 4 or 5 and they do not that often because quality goes down and mortality goes up. Freshwater mussels can be nucleated again with less mortality than the one time for akoyas. There is more control over the environment, ponds and streams as opposed to ocean water, which has typhoons and red tides to contend with.
2) Of course, Akoya Pearls are mostly round in shape.
And needless to say, Freshwater pearls are rarely round shaped.
The Akoya is nucleated with a round bead made from a freshwater mussel shell that is made round to begin with. The Freshwater mussel is nucleated with a piece of soft tissue, usually just a flat piece, or many flat pieces.
3) The freshwater pearl earring is solid nacre.
Here is something you might not know about...an Akoya Pearl Necklace has a bead core made of shell and only a coating of nacre, as thin as 1mm.
See above, the soft tissue that the freshwater mussel is nucleated with is absorbed leaving a pearl of solid nacre, more like natural pearls. The Akoya is nucleated with a shell bead of some size, and only allowed to develop nacre for a limited time before harvesting. The length of time is limited only by the cultivator's desire for quicker harvests.
4) A benefit of thicker nacre means that a freshwater pearl necklace will last longer.
Truth be told, low grade akoya pearl necklaces with a thin coating of nacre often chip and or wear off.
As you can imagine, a freshwater pearl with solid nacre has nothing to chip away; whereas, an Akoya pearl is possibly only a coating of as little as 1mm, so it can easily be worn or chipped.
5) The better grades of Akoya Pearl Jewelry have a higher luster compared to freshwater jewelry pearls.
A Freshwater pearl bracelet can have "orient', a rainbow iridescence noticed on heirloom or natural pearls. An Akoya pearl bracelet does not have this.
The nacre or mother of pearl of the Akoya has a greater luster or glow. The Freshwater pearl can have a trait called "orient" which is a shimmering of a rainbow of color, like the way that oil looks on water. Orient is seen on natural saltwater pearls and freshwater pearls; but, not on Akoya cultured pearls.
So it adds up to this: Things they are a changing. From keshi pearls called rice crispies because that's what they look like, to gem grade pearls. Freshwater jewelry pearls are now rivaling Akoya jewelry pearls in beauty.
Freshwater pearl jewelry is changing rapidly. A Freshwater pearl necklace will last longer, and be tomorrow's heirloom. Freshwater Pearls are gaining in quality and popularity.

How to Make Sure That You Do Not Cast Your Pearls Before Swine - What Does That Mean Anyway?
We are told by Jesus not to cast our pearls before swine as he says they may trample on what we have given them and then turn and try and rip us to pieces. Id someone had not told me what it means I might have been forever clueless, yet thankfully a writer told me what it was and this short article is going to tell you. I will tell you who the pigs are and I will tell you what your pearls are and I will tell you how not to cast them before the pigs. Are you ready?
In the book of Peter it talks about people that have been saved and then return to the things of the world and get in a worse condition then when they were first saved. These are talking about carnal Christians that are serving the flesh and all the lusts of the world and not serving God.
Peter says these people that are not sold out to God and who are serving the world and still professing to be Christians are actually like pigs that have been washed and then gone back to the mire. This passage gives us some insight into who the pigs are in Jesus parable.
To give you further insight into who pigs are let me say this. If you are having supernatural experiences like meeting Jesus and angels in visions and getting divine revelation, pigs are most often people that are not walking in those realms with you.
What do I mean?
Exactly that!
You see if you are sitting reading on the internet like this and Jesus turns up and sits down and waves to you, and you have a conversation with Him, who can you share that with without them telling you that you are mad?
Think about it.
Sure there are books about supernatural things happening and people eating them up, but if you tell your friends that you have gone to heaven and met Jesus and the saints and talked to them...will they attack you and say you have lost your mind?
The experience is the PEARL and the people that mock you are the PIGS.
Jesus says that it is okay to have pigs in your life. He says just not to share your pearls with them or they will trample your pearls ( say what you say is garbage) and they will turn and attack you ( say that you are out of your mind)
Its okay to have your friends and its okay that they are not experiencing the richness of your relationship with Jesus, just don't share the really deep and precious stuff with them or they will make you feel bad about what you have told them.
If you are reading the Bible and you get revelation in the Bible of a deep truth. That is a pearl. The first thought if you are anything like me is that you want to share it with every Christian that you know. And you may make that mistake and have people hurt you and say you are mad and that the scripture does not mean what you are saying it does. That's' okay, from now on you know the deep revelations in scripture are pearls and you have to chose not to share them with people that will not appreciate them.
I hope this has made the whole issue clearer for you.

The Guaymas Pearl Farm - How Cultured Pearls Are Produced
One of the most popular excursions in the Guaymas area for Rver's is a trip to the Perlas del Mar de Cortez pearl farm. It is at ITESM better known as Tec de Monterrey. Tec de Monterrey is an educational institution located inside a beautiful and tranquil bay, known as Bacochibampo Bay, Sea of Cortez. This pearl farm is the first in the region that shows the possibility of continued commercial success and has stirred a lot of excitement.
So how do you make a pearl? Mexican pearls are born out of two native pearl oysters, the "Panamic Black-Lipped Pearl Oyster and the "Rainbow-Lipped Pearl Oyster". The recipient oyster is around 2 years old and usually larger and older than the donor oyster. The donor oyster is selected for pearl characteristics, such as color and luster. that they are likely to impart to the cultured pearl. Now the delicate work begins. Much like a surgeon performing delicate surgery a pearl technician begins the grafting process. This involves using an assortment of surgical tools. Tissue taken from the donor pearl oyster is cut into small pieces and grafted into several dozen recipient oysters. After receiving their "implants" the oysters are suspended at a depth of 6 to 7 feet from the water surface in pocket like nets or rope chaplets.
After about two years the oysters are harvested. Will all of the implants produce pearls? No, only about 20% will produce salable cultured pearls. Various estimates put the yearly production of cultured pearls from this factory at around 10,000. No wonder Mexican pearls are the rarest in the world.
Let's talk about the various types of pearls that the farm produces:
Mabe or Half Pearl. This kind of pearl is formed when one (or more) nucleus is attached between the oysters shell and its mantle. The oyster reacts to this "intruder" by coating it with nacre, the substance that makes up the pearl. The shell is cut from the pearl and replaced with a backing made of mother of pearl. Mabe comes in a wide verity of unique shapes resulting in some unique jewelry creations.
Loose Pearls. These are the pearls most people instantly identify with the word pearl. However they are not perfectly round but are in many other shapes. The reason for this is that without the use of a round shell nucleus bead, it is virtually impossible to obtain a fully round pearl.
Keshi Pearls. "Keshi" in Japanese means "poppy seed". They come in different size, shape and coloration. They are highly sought after by designers seeking a new and refreshing look in their jewelry designs.
While the tour is free a stop in the gift shop could result in a thinner wallet.

Diamond and Pearls
Diamonds and pearls are a very interesting combination of jewels when set together. The diamond being the hardest gem stone of all and the Pearl being the only living gem stone. Apart from sharing individual uniqueness they also share other common but less well known attributes.
A diamond is the hardest gemstone known to man and takes hundred's of million's of years to form. For every diamond that is mined there is only a very, very small percentage that are of gemstone quality with the majority of the diamonds going to other purposes; such as being used in a wide variety of industries like IT and computer technology, and even for medical purposes.
Diamonds are even used today in Nano technology to help cure humans of deadly diseases like cancer because they are the perfect vehicles to carry more accurate doses of chemotherapy to cancer patients. The cancer patients suffer fewer side effects because of the lower dose required to kill the actual cancer cells while limiting the peripheral damage to healthy cells.
The pearl in some countries like China and other Asian countries is also used for medicinal purposes too. It gets ground up and added to various herbal medicines to keep humans healthy. So the diamond and the Pearl share another common denominator apart from beauty in a jewellery setting.
South Sea Pearls are produced in North Australian waters from Cape York around the Australian coastline and across to Broome in Western Australia. Pearling licences are restricted in Australia so this makes it a very lucrative operation and industry for those who are fortunate enough to own the majority of the pearling licences like Paspaley Pearls. Over the years they have bought out most of the limited licences and are now known worldwide as the biggest and best producers of south sea pearls. And there is no doubt about it that the pearls are fat, lustrous and vibrant.
So when the diamond and pearls meet in thoughtful well designed jewellery settings the lustre of the pearls is the perfect bed for the sparkle of diamonds.

Pearls As Gifts
The great thing about pearls is that they never go out of fashion and often passed on from one generation to another. They symbolize purity of love and romance. In many societies brides are often given these as gifts for good luck and harmony - promote marital bliss!
Since pearl jewelry comes in many colors, shapes and sizes, one can always buy them in any assortment of jewelry pieces from necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other body piercings. The best way to find the perfect pearl gift for a woman is to pay attention to her style and what her favorite colors are. (Something that will compliment the colors in her wardrobe)
Dressier occasions call for dressier pearls, such as a string of pearls, or pearl string bracelet. Some pieces come studded with other gemstones as well. After you have made up your mind as to what color and what jewelry pieces you want for her, then you may also consider if the pearl gift will be used for formal occasions, or just for more casual attire. Also classic pearl necklace string or a single pearl with a diamond accent.
Necklace Length - You can buy pearl necklaces in a number of different lengths. The lengths and fancy names are:
Collar - 12-13"
Choker - 14-16"
Princess - 17-19"
Matinee - 20-25"
Opera - 26-36"
Rope - 37" and Over
Pearls can be symmetrical, baroque, tear-drop shaped or irregular. Sphere like pearls mostly command higher value.
When it comes to checking the quality of pearls, do it under direct light and on a flat white surface. Check the whole string for luster and overtone. Lustrous pearls have shiny surface. There should be good contrast between light and dark, as well as strong and crisp reflections. A play of iridescent rainbow with high quality colors. Is the color look more natural or color-enhanced? Overtones - a tint secondary to the main body color. Make sure there are minimal defects such as nicks, cracks, pits, blemishes or discoloration. Thick nacre is the key.
